When paid search is the right answer

Paid search suits three situations. You need enquiries this month and cannot wait for SEO to mature. You are entering a market where the top organic positions are held by national companies. Or you want to test whether a service sells at all before investing in pages, content and links.

It suits you badly if your margin per job is small, if nobody searches for what you do, or if you cannot answer the phone when it rings. We will tell you if we think that is the case.

What we do with the account

  • Keyword and competitor research — which phrases signal somebody ready to buy, and what your rivals are paying for them.
  • Campaign structure — tight ad groups so that each advert matches the search behind it. Loose structure is the commonest reason a budget disappears.
  • Negative keywords — the list of searches you never want to pay for. On most new accounts this alone saves a quarter of the spend.
  • Ad copy and extensions — several variants tested against each other, with call, location and sitelink extensions filled in.
  • Landing pages — an advert can only do half the job. If the page it lands on is weak, we will say so and can write a proper one for £120.
  • Conversion tracking — calls, form submissions and purchases recorded, so we optimise for enquiries rather than for clicks.
  • Ongoing management — bids, budgets, search terms and pausing what loses money, reviewed weekly.

What it costs

There are two separate things to pay for, and it is worth being clear about which is which.

The account stays yours. If you leave, you keep the campaigns, the history and the data — we do not build them in an agency account you cannot take with you.

How we judge whether it works

One number matters more than the rest: cost per enquiry. Clicks, impressions and click-through rate explain that number, but they do not replace it. Once there is enough data we can put it against what a customer is worth to you, and then the decision to spend more or less becomes arithmetic rather than opinion.

Expect the first four to six weeks to be noisier and more expensive per enquiry than what follows. That period is buying information: which searches convert, which do not, and where the negative keyword list needs to grow.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget?

Enough that the campaign gets data. Under about £300 a month a local campaign takes too long to learn anything useful. We would rather run one service well than five badly.

Do you take a percentage of my spend?

No. A flat monthly fee, because a percentage rewards us for spending your money rather than for spending it well.

Can you work with an existing account?

Yes, and usually that is cheaper — the history in it is valuable. We audit it first and tell you what we would change.

What about Bing, Facebook or Instagram?

Bing is often overlooked and cheap for some sectors. Social advertising is a different job with a different intent behind it — see social media marketing.

Do I need SEO as well?

Eventually, yes. Ads give you a tap you can turn on; search positions are the asset you build. See search engine marketing for how the two are planned together.
